TUCSON, Arizona – The University of Arizona Police Department (UAPD) is investigating multiple incidents of thefts from Jeep Wrangler model vehicles.

Since the beginning of the 2021 fall semester, UAPD has investigated four (4) incidents of thefts from Jeep Wrangler model vehicles parked inside campus garages. These incidents fit a similar pattern in which the vehicle battery was disconnected, disabling the alarm system. These vehicle models have stock exterior hood latches, allowing access to the engine compartment without the need for a key or interior hood release. In all incidents, damage was caused to the vehicles and valuable items were stolen.

Detectives with UAPD are actively investigating these incidents and no further details are available at this time.

To prevent further thefts, UAPD is asking the community:

  • If you own a Jeep Wrangler or vehicle with a similar hood latching system, consider installing an aftermarket locking or anti-theft device for the engine hood
  • Avoid leaving valuable items inside your vehicle
  • If possible, document the model & serial number of any aftermarket electronics
  • Where possible, park your vehicle in a well-lit and/or high-use area
  • Report any suspicious persons or activity to UAPD immediately by calling 9-1-1, utilizing a campus emergency blue light phone, or using the LiveSafe App.
