Tucson, Ariz. – The University of Arizona Police Department (UAPD) has been awarded three grants by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). The grants, totaling $26,682, began on October 1, 2019, as part of the 2020 fiscal year. The three grants provide support toward education/enforcement of bicycle and pedestrian laws, the deployment of officers for DUI enforcement and underage drinking violations as well as traffic enforcement.

As part of an ongoing effort, UAPD is regularly involved in the Southern Arizona DUI Task Force to address DUI and impaired-driver enforcement. GOHS funding assists UAPD in adding officers for these deployments.

Compliance with traffic laws is crucial to the safety of our community. With these grants, UAPD will be able to supplement patrol operations around peak traffic periods and provide more education to the public.

UAPD reminds the community to remain alert while traveling, obey all traffic laws, avoid distracted driving and drink responsibly and legally.

GOHS, along with Director Alberto Gutier, remain partners with UAPD in the promotion of public safety through education and enforcement. For more information on GOHS programs, visit the GOHS website.
