Crime Alert

Tucson, Arizona - On January 14, 2024 at 1:36am, UAPD received a report of a male with a gun in his waistband who was seen entering a 3rd floor restroom in the Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall. While UAPD officers responded to the multi-level residence hall, students called 9-1-1 with additional information after seeing the UAlert messages.

Because of the rapid response by UAPD officers and assistance from the residence hall staff the male with the gun was located inside a residence hall dorm room on the 4th floor. The officers detained and identified the male, interviewed him, and removed a loaded handgun from the residence hall without further incident or injury to anyone. At this time, the shelter in place directive was lifted.

In the course of the investigation, officers discovered that the male is 17 years old and not a student or an employee of the university. The juvenile male who was intoxicated was visiting a friend who resides at the Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall where he was going to remain for the evening. The juvenile male was arrested and later released to his parents with a referral to Pima County Juvenile Court for criminal violations of Disorderly Conduct, Weapons Misconduct (not of legal age to possess a gun), and being a Minor in Possession of Spirituous Liquor.

UAPD would like to thank our partners at UA Housing and Residential Life for their cooperation on this case, along with the campus community for their timely calls to 9-1-1.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
