Tucson, Arizona – The University of Arizona Police Department (UAPD) is asking the public’s help to identify a person of interest of an attempted catalytic converter theft.
On June 15th, 2022, at 09:40 a.m., UAPD received a phone call from a witness of an attempted catalytic converter theft in Lot #1232 on the University of Arizona campus. A male and female subject were seen inside a beige/gold in color Hyundai Santa Fe parked in the lot. The male exited the vehicle and began trying to remove the catalytic converter of a vehicle parked near them. The subjects appeared to realize they were observed by bystanders and fled the scene in the Hyundai Santa Fe. UAPD responded and found the victim’s vehicle damaged.
UAPD Detectives are actively investigating this incident and have included photos of the male subject, who is described as:
- Male
- 30-40 years of age
- White or Hispanic
- 5’10”-6ft
- Thin build

UAPD reminds our community members to:
- Always lock your vehicle doors and activate any alarm systems
- Avoid leaving valuables inside your vehicle, secure them in the trunk or a locked compartment and obscured from view
- Where possible, park your vehicle in a well-it and/or high-use area
