Arrest Made in Rec Center Thefts
Tucson, Arizona – The University of Arizona Police Department (UAPD) detectives set up a detailed operation to monitor the University of Arizona's Campus Recreation (Campus REC) center following numerous thefts.
Management at the Campus REC contacted police regarding a rash of ongoing thefts from the lockers at the facility. Detectives began investigating the more than a dozen thefts. Working with Rec Center staff, detectives utilized multiple bait lockers in an attempt to positively identify a suspect in our investigation.
Following another locker theft that was perpetrated, detectives were able to identify the suspect believed to be behind the most current thefts.
The student was caught on video outside the locker room entering the area at the time the theft was committed and later admitted to more than 15 thefts.
Detectives continue to investigate and monitor the area with bait lockers, searching for any additional suspects involved in the rash of thefts.
UAPD Police Chief Chris Olson said “Criminals will concentrate on an area if they are successful. The quick action by the Campus REC staff to engage police and the great work done by our detectives ended this rash of thefts before the start of the new semester,” Chief Olson continued by saying. “It is only with the help of the Wildcat Community that we can deter thefts on campus.”
Here are some important steps to help safeguard your possessions:
- Stay Vigilant: While hitting the gym, stay alert and keep an eye on your surroundings. Your awareness is your best defense.
- Secure Your Lockers: Always use a sturdy lock for your gym locker, and make sure it's properly locked. Although, in this case tools were used to dismantle the lock, a good lock will add a layer of deterrent.
- Limit Valuables: Only bring what you need to Campus REC. Leave expensive items at home and consider investing in a small lockable pouch to keep on your person for essentials like keys, wallet, and phone.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you witness anything out of the ordinary or suspicious, please don't hesitate to approach the Campus REC staff and inform them.
- Contact the University of Arizona Police Department (UAPD) by calling (520) 621-8273 (621-UAPD) for non-emergencies. You can also call or text 911 for emergencies that require immediate police response.
