Media Release

Tucson, Arizona - The University of Arizona Police Department (UAPD) has been awarded two grants by the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) totaling $16,000 for the fiscal year 2026. These grants provide support toward the deployment of officers for DUI enforcement and the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP).

As part of an ongoing initiative, UAPD supports the Southern Arizona DUI Task Force in their efforts to conduct impaired driver enforcement. UAPD received $10,000 in GOHS funding to assist with increasing the number of UAPD officers participating in the task force deployments.

Compliance with traffic laws is crucial to the safety of our community. UAPD received $,6000 in GOHS funding to support our STEP efforts. This allocation will enable UAPD to conduct additional enforcement and provide education to the public during peak traffic periods and holidays.

UAPD reminds the community to remain alert while traveling on the roadways, obey all traffic laws, avoid distracted driving, and drink legally and responsibly.

GOHS, led by Director J.M. “Jesse” Torrez, and UAPD remain partners in promoting traffic safety through enforcement and education. For more information regarding these programs, please visit the GOHS website at http://www.azgohs.gov/. UAPD would like to thank GOHS for the additional funding and their continuing support in keeping the roadways within and outside of The University of Arizona safe.
