Lieutenant Juan Alvarez began his law enforcement career in 1987 as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff with the Pima County Sheriff's Department. Lieutenant Alvarez began his UAPD career as a Patrol Officer in 1990. In 1992, Alvarez was assigned to the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Trafficking and Interdiction Squad as a Narcotic Investigator, and worked undercover enforcing narcotics laws within Pima County. In 1994, Alvarez was promoted to the rank of Corporal assigned to patrol. In 2001, Alvarez was assigned to the Investigations Unit as a Detective responsible for general investigations. In June 2005, Alvarez was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assigned as Patrol Supervisor. In 2008, Alvarez was selected by the Chief of Police to be UAPD’s Public Information Officer and to supervise the Crime Prevention Unit. In April 2013, Alvarez was assigned to supervise the Investigations Unit. In November 2014, Alvarez was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned to the Operations Support Division responsible for managing the Communications, Training, Records, and Property & Evidence Units of the Department. In January of 2017, Alvarez was assigned to the Field Operations Division responsible for managing a section of Patrol and Police Aides and the Investigations Unit. Alvarez has also served as Acting Field Operations Division Commander, Field Training Officer, Firearms Instructor and Academy Class Adviser. Lieutenant Alvarez holds a Bachelor’s degree in Justice Systems Policy and Planning, and a Masters of Administration, from Northern Arizona University. Lieutenant Alvarez attended the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management Southwest Leadership Program and The University of Arizona’s Academic Leadership Institute.
