Tucson, Ariz. - On May 2, 2016, the University of Arizona Police Department (UAPD) with the assistance from Tucson Police Department S.W.A.T. team has made an arrest in last week’s shooting which occurred on the University of Arizona campus.
Christopher Eugene, 29, was arrested without incident at his residence at 7:00am Monday morning. He is currently being held in the Pima County Jail on three felony charges, including; two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of aggravated robbery.
Through their investigation, UAPD Detectives were able to gather evidence confirming Mr. Eugene was the individual responsible for the shooting. Neither Mr. Eugene nor the victim have any affiliation with the University of Arizona.
The shooting was reported to UAPD on April 27, 2016 at 7:34 pm after a citizen called 911 reporting possible gun shots in the area of the area of the Keating/BIO5 building, 1657 E. Helen Street. When officers arrived at the scene they located shell casings and blood, no victim or suspects were found in the area. About 90 minutes after the shooting, a male, who was later identified as the victim, checked himself into a local hospital for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
On the night of the shooting several UAlerts were sent out warning the University of Arizona community of the incident. Through those alerts UAPD received several tips about the incident, which aided the investigation and apprehension of Eugene.
This case is still currently under investigation by the University of Arizona Police Department. Due to the on-going investigation, UAPD is not releasing a photo of Mr. Eugene.
Initial Released information
Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Arizona Police Department continues to investigate a shooting that occurred Wednesday evening, outside the Keating/Bio5 building, 1657 E Helen St.
UAPD received a 911 call at 7:34 p.m. reporting possible gun shots fired in the area.
UAPD officers responded and located several shell casings and small amount of blood. An extensive search was conducted to locate a victim and suspects.
At approximately 9:00 p.m. a local hospital reported that a 23-year-old male had sought assistance for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his buttocks. The victim was treated and released from the hospital early Thursday morning. It was determined the victim was the male person of interest announced in the UAlerts.
The victim told investigators he rode the Sun Link Streetcar to the Warren Ave. stop, and when he got off the streetcar, he said he was approached by three African-American males. One of the suspects shot at the victim several times, striking the victim once. A witness has assisted UAPD in completing a composite image of the individual. The composite of the suspect is attached.
The suspects fled in a “dark colored SUV.” UAPD detectives believe the victim and the suspects had a previous encounter off campus and the shooting incident was directed specifically at the victim. By 10:00 p.m. UAPD determined there was no ongoing threat to the campus.
Anyone with information about last night’s incident is asked to call UAPD at (520) 621-8273 or 911.
Four UAlerts were sent to the campus community on Wednesday evening warning recipients to avoid the area and be alert for suspicious persons. Based on those alerts, UAPD received calls from individuals providing additional information.
This is an ongoing investigation, and further information will be provided when available.
